Mauritius, whilst fairly new on the world’s golf scene is fast gaining popularity for golf holidays. The island boasts six Championship-quality 18 hole courses as well as year-round sunshine, fantastic beaches, luxurious hotels and friendly service.
With a rise in popularity many golf courses in Mauritius have developed strategic alliances to offer reciprocal deals. This opens up the possibility for golfers to play more than one course on a visit with relative ease. Also Resorts owned by the same hotel group will offer you complimentary access.
The general consensus of members of staff at Mahlatini Africa Travel who have played all of the major courses on the island is that the two courses at the Belle Mare Plage (Legends and The Links) are the best in Mauritius but the Bernhard Langer designed course at Le Touessrok, the new Ernie Els designed Anahita Golf Course and the West Coast course at Paradis / DinaRobin all give the Belle Mare Plage courses a run for their money in terms of challenges and stunning scenery.
Also worth a mention is the Golf du Chateau championship course at Heritage Awali and Le Telfair Resorts. It offers just enough risk and reward holes to provide a challenge without major frustration. There are also a couple of 9-hole courses at Le Saint Geran, Trou aux Biches and Maritim which may prove less taxing for a beginner or for any children wishing to start into the sport.
If you don’t wish to travel with your clubs you can hire clubs locally with brand names like Callaway and Taylormade. The 18-hole courses all have practice facilities with range balls to purchase. At some courses you may be required to take a caddy car while certain other courses offer golf trolleys or caddies. Distances are in metres and Royal and Ancient Rules of Golf apply.
